Tips For Successful Sourdough Scoring
I know sourdough can feel a little daunting, especially when you’ve put so much effort into getting to the baking stage. But here’s the thing—don’t let the pressure of perfection take away from the joy of the process. My number one tip? Have fun with it! Even if your scoring design comes out a little quirky, I promise the bread will still taste incredible. If you check out the before-and-after photos on this blog, you’ll see some of my scoring didn’t go as planned—but every loaf has its own kind of beauty, and yours will too.
Let Your Bread Chill (Literally!)
For the second rise, I always pop my dough into the fridge overnight. In the morning, I preheat my oven and Dutch oven until they’re both good and hot. Once preheated, I take the dough straight from the fridge and score it immediately. Working with cold dough makes scoring so much easier, especially for more intricate designs.
Flour Is Your Best Friend
A light dusting of flour on the surface of your dough before scoring can really make your design stand out. I usually use all-purpose flour, but freshly milled wheat or rice flour works too. Just keep in mind that some flours may subtly change the flavor of your bread, so experiment with what you like. The goal is to highlight those beautiful cuts!
